A (Multi) Touching Story

Have you used a multi-touch device or computer?

Thanks to the popularity of the iPhone, touch-screens are all the rage.

But are touch screens really better?

Last week, Dan Woods wrote in how multi-touch computers are causing confusion.

I tend to agree! With any new technology, there is a learning curve. Most features in applications are visible and you get a sense for how to perform functions pretty quickly.

See a button?  Click it. Then figure out what it does.

Learn one app and you can likely apply the lessons to other apps.

With multi-touch devices a disturbing trend has started. There’s no help! There aren’t any real established interface standards. Or at least no standards that I’m aware of yet!

Without any guidance, learning gestures can be a guessing game. You either pick it up by trial and error, reading the help, or watching tutorials or others perform the actions.

Learn Gestures for MindManager 8

With the new Windows 7, multi-touch is enabled natively. That’s a big change!

And our most recent update to MindManager 8 for Windows takes advantage of this. We’ve enabled multi-touch gestures to make it easier to manipulate and navigate your maps.

It comes in handy when you’re working on a multi-touch enabled laptop with Windows 7!

So where is all this touching story headed?

Take a peek inside Microsoft’s vision for 2019, you’ll be amazed. It’s well worth the watch if you’d like to see how touch-screens and other emerging technologies will change the way we live, work, and learn.
